According to a survey conducted in 2020 in Australia about digital consumer trends, 58 percent of respondents owned or had access to a smart TV. The survey was conducted in June and July when most of the country was coming out of its first COVID-19 lockdown. In recent years, there has been an uptake in the ownership of smart devices that make use of IoT technology.
Smart households
The number of households in Australia that own internet-connected devices were forecast to more than double by 2024. Currently, the average household has around 20 internet-connected devices, and this number looks set to increase significantly, driven by IoT devices in homes. These devices include smart cameras, video doorbells, smart outlets, smart speakers, and energy sensors to name a few. A smart home may include any number of these devices integrated into its setup so that they can be automatically and remotely controlled from anywhere with an internet connection.
Spotlight on smart speakers
Smart speakers are a growing segment of the smart home market. Google holds the largest share of the smart speaker operator market in Australia, with its closest competitor being Amazon. Despite its market dominance, downloads of the Google Assistant app have stabilized over the past year. On the other hand, Amazon Alexa app downloads have trended towards an overall increase in 2020. This may indicate more competition in the smart speaker market, with operators bringing out improvements in their apps leading to a wider range of options for consumers.
