During the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, several museums worldwide had to close to the public for long periods, as governments enacted lockdowns and strict safety regulations to contain the health crisis. As a result of the closures, most museums around the world reported revenue losses in 2020. According to a May 2021 study, about 12.5 percent of surveyed museums lost more than 90 percent of annual revenue in 2020. Meanwhile, only one in ten institutions experienced a revenue loss of up to 10 percent.
