The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic forced many museums across the world to close in 2020. As a result, some of these institutions organized digital activities for the public. According to a November 2020 study, about 42 percent of the surveyed museums worldwide increased their social media activities after the lockdown. Meanwhile, roughly a quarter of institutions involved in the survey claimed to have started offering digital live events after the lockdown.
