In response to the economic damage caused by the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the European Union created several financial support mechanisms, with a temporary unemployment support fund called SURE, providing up to 100 billion euros of loans to member states that require assistance. Italy, which was one of the worst hit countries in the early stages of the pandemic, is set to be the biggest receiver of this type of assistance, and had secured 20.95 billion Euros by February 2021, with a further 6.45 billion euros set to be procured at a future date.
