The number of animation production companies in Japan that ended their operations decreased to one in 2020, according to survey data that covered the period from January to July during that year. The largest number of companies ending their operations was recorded in 2018. Out of the twelve companies ending their operations during that year, seven went bankrupt, while five suspended their operations or were dissolved. The source pointed out that rising wages due to labor shortages and higher payments to subcontractors were factors that led to sales below the break-even point and an impasse regarding the cash flow. Bankruptcies that came about after animators frequently could not be paid or received their remuneration after a delay stood out among the cases in the recent years.
