Direct state and local tax revenue generated from hotels reached 41 billion U.S. dollars in 2019. This was forecast to drop by more than 10 billion U.S. dollars in 2020 when the hotel industry was hit hard by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Tax revenue from hotels was forecast to rise again by 2022 to 37 billion U.S. dollars.
