Out-of-school population among lower secondary school children 2000-2018, by gender

Up until 2011, a higher number of girls of lower secondary school age were out of school than boys. 54 million girls and 46 million boys were not enrolled in lower secondary school education in 2000. By 2018, this was the case for 32 million boys and 30 million girls. Considering primary education, however, a higher number of girls continue to be out of school.
