According to a survey conducted in South Korea in 2020, nearly 70 percent of HR managers surveyed believed that companies will hire more home office workers after the COVID-19 pandemic. Mainly large and medium-sized enterprises shared this view, followed by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and public corporations.
Remote work in South Korea
Flexible work arrangements were first introduced in South Korea in 1997 but have had little success. Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, many companies have begun to implement various forms of hybrid and remote work models for their employees. As a result, telecommuting surged in South Korea during the pandemic, with the number of employees working from home or remotely exceeding one million in August 2021.
Software and tools
With the rise of working from home, online meeting platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams have seen a significant increase in popularity. In September 2020, the number of “ZOOM Cloud Meetings” users in South Korea amounted to around seven million, a 39-fold increase from February the same year. The number of teams using the collaboration tool JANDI amounted to around 300 thousand. JANDI is a collaboration platform from Toss Lab and is known as the Korean version of Slack.
