U.S. total and e-commerce sports, hobby, instrument, and book stores sales 2004-2021

In 2021, sales of U.S. sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument, and bookstore stores were valued at a total of about 102.5 billion U.S. dollars. Approximately 6.33 billion of those dollars were specifically generated online by these stores.

Sporting goods sales in the U.S.

Much of the sales generated by these different store types was specifically made by sporting goods stores: in 2020, sporting goods stores in the United States accounted for a total of about 53 billion U.S. dollars of sales. Sporting goods store sales have fluctuated in recent years, however, this figure was an increase compared to 2019. Similarly, U.S. hobby, toy, and game store sales had also experienced growth that year.

 

What do consumers like to buy online?

In recent years, store sales declined in favor of e-commerce mainly because buying online has become a widespread commonality. Some product types, however, are more frequently acquired online than others. For instance, when asked which of the following products they mostly bought online rather than offline, about three in ten consumers in the United States said they usually purchased books, movies, music & games on the web. On the other hand, less than ten percent of respondents had a habit of buying DIY and gardening goods using online channels.
