Distribution of migrants in Libya 2020, by country of origin
In September and October 2020, the majority of the migrants in Libya were from Niger, constituting 20 percent of the total. International migrants in Libya were mainly from sub-Saharan Africa. Indeed, the country represents a transit point between Africa and Europe. However, the number of people who reach Libya from the African continent, especially West Africa, has decreased in recent years. The unsafe and dangerous routes through the Sahara Desert, dominated by migrant smugglers, are among the reasons behind the decrease in migration.
