Under the effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, many retailers in Germany faced restrictions in business activity. During the nationwide lockdowns, certain shops had to close or adopt alternative processes such as online marketplaces and click and collect. As of the fourth quarter of 2020, the retail real estate take-up in Germany measured 102 thousand square meters. Since then, the retail real estate take-up has generally increased with fluctuation to 109 thousand square meters in the second quarter of 2022.
