The number of victims of online banking fraud in Japan amounted to 819 in 2021, of which 725 were individuals and 94 were corporations. A surge in online banking frauds was detected in 2019, with many cases being related to SMS messages and e-mails impersonating financial institutions. The overwhelming majority of victims during that year were individuals.
