The completion rate of lower secondary schools worldwide stood at around 76 percent in 2019. The completion rate increased over the past two decades as only about 63 percent of children in lower secondary age finished school in 2000. By comparison, the completion rate for children in primary school stood at about 90 percent in 2020.

It is calculated as the number of new entrants in the last grade of lower secondary education, regardless of age, divided by the population at the entrance age for the last grade of lower secondary education.
