Japan: cashless rebate program impact on cashless payment usage 2020

According to a survey conducted in 2020, around 16.7 of the respondents stated that they had started using cashless payment methods due to the cashless rebate program, while more than 70 percent had been using cashless payments before.
The Japanese government introduced the cashless rebate program in October 2019 to mitigate the impact of a consumption tax hike on consumers while promoting the use of cashless payment methods.

Original survey question: "The cashless point reward program ended in June. Were there any changes regarding your use of cashless payments as a result of the cashless point reward program? Please tell us what applies most to you."

The survey results were adjusted to be consistent with the results of the national census in terms of the distribution of region, age, and gender. In addition, the results were corrected for high and low internet literacy ratios using the results of a separate survey.
