The adolescent birthrate worldwide declined since the turn of the millennium. Particularly in South Asia, there was a sharp drop in the fertility rate among girls between 15 and 19 years of age from 2000 to 2006. Creating educational opportunities for girls and young women is key in reducing adolescent fertility, and the global literacy rate among youth increased among both boys and girls since 2000. Today, the highest adolescent birth rates are found in Sub-Saharan Africa.
