India: COVID-19 impact on estimated income group by type 2021

As of April 2021, estimates for income groups showed a significant decline in the composition of the middle class across India as a result of the impact from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Pre-pandemic projections put this number at 99 million, which saw a drop of 30 million in a post-pandemic scenario. Furthermore, this reflected in a growing number within the poor income group.

According to the source, "the poor live on two U.S. dollars or less daily, low income between 2.01 and 10 dollars, middle income between 10.1 and 20 dollars, upper-middle income between 20.1 and 50 dollars, and high income on more than 50 dollars.
It is assumed there is no change in income distribution from the benchmark year for the projection in 2020. The term "post-pandemic" refers to the period since the onset of the pandemic in January 2020."
