In 2021, the Spanish pharmaceutical industry invested approximately 592.7 million euros in external research and development projects. Madrid and Catalonia were the autonomous communities with the highest share of the external R&D expenditure that year, concentrating around 29.95 percent and 27.27 percent of the total external research pharmaceutical spending in the country, respectively.
