Number of emigrants in Norway 2021, by age group

Emigration from Norway has generally declined over the past decade. The lowest number of emigrants was registered in 2020 when around 26.7 thousand people left the Scandinavian country. In 2021, the number of emigrations increased again to around 34 thousand. People aged 16 to 44 formed the biggest group of emigrants in that year, reaching over 21 thousand individuals.

Where do the emigrants go?

The highest proportion of emigrants from Norway go to neighboring countries. In 2020, most of the emigrants moved to Sweden, reaching close to three thousand individuals. Denmark was the country of destination with the second most emigrants, counting almost 2.8 thousand individuals. Other popular destinations were Poland (1.6 thousand emigrants), the United Kingdom (1.3 thousand emigrants), and Germany (850 emigrants).

Fewer immigrants

Not only has emigration numbers decreased in Norway, but the same tendency can also be observed regarding immigration figures. Considering the migration flow in the country, the number of immigrants also reached an all-time low in 2020 when only around 38 thousand people moved to Norway. In 2021, the number of immigrants coming to Norway increased again to pre-COVID levels.
