Gross residential mortgage lending in Germany 2015-2022, by mortgage type
Despite the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, new mortgage lending remained strong in Germany, with March 2021 and March 2022 seeing record-high values. During the observation period, 10-year fixed rate mortgages accounted for nearly half of mortgage lending, followed by 5 to 10 year fixed rate mortgages. With interest rates gradually increasing as a response to the rising inflation, the mortgage market has started to cool down: In August 2022, the volume of new mortgage loans amounted to about 18.5 billion euros, down from 22.7 billion in the year before.
