Light-duty trucks are the largest source of transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, having released nearly 672 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) in 2021. Meanwhile, passanger cars produced 374.2 MtCO₂e worth of greenhouse gases that year, a decrease of roughly 42 percent in comparison to 1990 levels.
