Major glass manufacturing companies Japan 2021-2022, by sales

With sales worth approximately 1.7 trillion Japanese yen, AGC Inc. represented the largest glass manufacturing company in Japan in terms of sales in 2021 and 2022. Hoya Corporation followed, with a sales value of over 661 billion yen.

Asahi Glass ranks among global players

AGC ranked among the global leading glass companies based on revenue, alongside other Japanese glass manufacturers such as Kyocera and Nippon Sheet Glass.
AGC Inc. was formerly named Asahi Glass Co., Ltd., but was renamed in 2018. The glass manufacturer is headquartered in Tokyo and was founded in 1907 as the first Japanese producer of sheet glass. The company remains one of the largest flat glass producers worldwide. The main business segments of AGC include glass products, such as architectural and automotive glass, chemicals, and ceramics.

Bottles and food containers represent common glass products 

In Japan, glass products are commonly used for packaging. Liquor bottles, and food containers were the glass products with the highest production volumes. Glass is infinitely recyclable, reusable, and a more sustainable alternative to plastic packaging. However, paper continues to dominate the packaging materials market, contributing the largest shipment volume of packaging materials in recent years, as it is lighter and less fragile than glass.
