Number of emigrants from South Africa 2020, by area of destination and gender
In 2020, cumulative South African emigrants amounted to roughly 915 thousand. Around 525 thousand, of which roughly 51 percent were females, settled in Europe and Northern America. Moreover, in most destinations, South African females were in higher number than males. Only in Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean the male-to-female ratio was higher. Overall, an increasing trend in the number of people migrating from South Africa has been registered since 2000.
