While men can appear shirtless without any problem, social networks consider it indecent for a woman to show her breasts and a little girl to pose topless. Female nipples are almost automatically censored by the algorithm of these platforms, and in 2020, half of the French were supportive of a law to prohibit social networks from censoring photos on which female nipples appear. The people most in favor of such a law were under 25 years old.
The censorship of female bodies on social networks highlights their widespread sexualization in society, and it is partly to fight against this hyper-sexualization that some French women have decided to stop wearing bras.
