The number of permits for single-family construction decreased a lot in the most densely populated areas of the United States in the first quarter of 2023. Meanwhile, there was a relatively small fall in the number of new permits in micro counties. During the past years, the core of large metropolitan areas have generally had lower growth rates than outlying areas, or smaller metropolitan areas. This would signal that there has been more supply of single-homes in counties further apart from city centers.
