The highest paid athlete in the world in 2022 was soccer superstar Lionel Messi, who racked up on and off field earnings of around 130 million U.S. dollars. However, the Argentine was one of only five soccer players to make it into the top 50 ranking of highest paid athletes. Meanwhile, 18 stars from the National Football League (NFL) made it into the top 50, including legendary quarterback Tom Brady.
