Number of children in child labor in Africa 2020

Sub-Saharan Africa has more children in child labor than in the rest of the world combined. According to estimates, 86.6 million children aged 5-17 years were involved in child labor in the region as of 2020. This number rose by more than 16 million since 2016. Furthermore, it represented a 24 percent prevalence of child labor in Sub-Saharan Africa.

According to the source, the 2020 calculations are based on the extrapolation of data from national household surveys. The new estimates use more than 100 household surveys covering two thirds of the world’s population of children aged 5 to 17 years.
