Due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, many global art fairs were canceled or rescheduled in 2020. According to a March 2021 study focusing on 365 fine art, decorative, and antique fairs worldwide, 38 percent of the art fairs considered held online editions in 2020 as an alternative to their in-person events during the pandemic. When focusing on the canceled fairs, the share of online editions rose to 44 percent. In contrast, only 29 percent of the held art fairs offered an online alternative in 2020.

The source specified that 61 percent of the 365 art fairs considered were canceled, 37 percent held live events, and two percent organized hybrid events or live alternative events (such as smaller fairs, fairs organized across different locations, etcetera).
