In 2019, Canadian men and women were divided regarding the approach the Canadian government should take with regard to asylum seekers arriving at the Canadian border who have already made a refugee claim in the United States.
A large proportion of women (41.7 percent) felt that these claimants should be given a full hearing to determine whether they should be allowed to enter Canada or returned to their country of origin. In contrast, more than 40 percent of men thought that these immigrants should be refused entry to Canada and returned to their country of origin. Additionally, almost one in five Canadians thought that these people should be given a shorter process to determine whether it is safe to send them back to their country of origin.
If an asylum seeker has already made a refugee claim in the United States, what should the government of Canada do for that asylum seeker if they show up at the Canadian border seeking asylum in Canada?
