According to respondents surveyed throughout the United States, female students are less likely to receive encouragement from an adult in their lives to pursue some form of a career in computer science compared to their male counterparts, as of 2020. Only 37 percent of surveyed female students received encouragement from an adult to pursue a career in computer science, while 52 percent of male students received encouragement for the same.
However, once a female student has received such encouragement from an adult, she becomes more likely to receive encouragement from a teacher pursue a CS career, and the gender gap narrows.
