Japan: number of licensed motorcycle drivers by license type 2021

As of December 31, 2021, Japan had around 1.03 million licensed motorcycle drivers, decreasing from roughly 1.1 million license holders in the previous year. Within past years, the number of license holders consecutively grew smaller for each license category.

*Motorized bicycle licenses can be obtained separately but are included in every other category apart from small special-purpose vehicle licenses. Under the Road Traffic Act, motorized bicycles have an engine capacity up to 50cc or a rated output of up to 0.6kW.
**Ordinary and large two-wheeler licenses may have an automatic transmission (AT) restriction. Ordinary two-wheeler licenses moreover may have an engine capacity restriction of 125cc.
