As of November 2020, European power utilities were leading the renewable energy sector, based on project pipeline capacity. At the time, Spanish Iberdrola had planned renewable capacity additions adding up to some 35 gigawatts. Italian Enel's pipeline also promised additions of around 30 gigawatts. Meanwhile, Big Oil companies in the region lagged behind, with less than 10 gigawatts of renewable capacity in each company's project pipeline.
