Share of female managers in companies with 100+ employees in Iceland 2021

In Iceland, women hold a minority of top positions within companies with 100 or more employees. Only around 16 percent of managers and chairpersons of these companies are women. The numbers are higher for the board of directors, with around 37 percent for companies with 100-249 employees and over 40 percent for companies with 250+ employees. These numbers may come as a surprise, as Iceland was ranked the best country for gender equality in the world 2020, however this discrepancy is usually explained by the fact that women are much more likely to pause or stop career development when they have children.
