Global methane (CH4) emissions produced from enteric fermentation in cattle were estimated at 74.5 million metric tons in 2022, with almost 75 percent of emissions coming from non-dairy cattle. Annual emissions from cattle have risen by more than 13 percent since the turn of century.
Enteric fermentation is a part of the digestive process in animals such as cattle, sheep, and buffalo. This process produces methane, which is a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential roughly 30 times greater than carbon dioxide. Enteric fermentation is one of the main sources of agriculture emissions.
