In the fiscal year 2022, the market size of food delivery via mail-order in Japan amounted to an estimated 4.58 trillion Japanese yen. The food delivery market has been continuously expanding during the surveyed period. The market size is expected to stagnate from 2024 onwards.
Food delivery by consumer cooperatives
Food delivery by consumer cooperatives (Seikyo) comprised the second-largest segment in the food delivery industry, generating more than one third of the industry's revenue. Consumer cooperatives have a long tradition in Japan and are well-established in society, shown by the large household subscription rates throughout the country. Community-based retail co-ops are the principal agents involved in food distribution, constituting the main pillar of consumer cooperatives in terms of membership and generated revenue alike.
Consumer behavior
With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, consumer behavior shifted in favor of food deliveries. This includes online grocery shopping, as well as meal deliveries from restaurants. In terms of online grocery shopping, Rakuten Seiyu, Aeon, and Ito-Yokado were the top runners. On average, the most common price range for food deliveries was between 2,000 and 2,500 Japanese yen, but the spectrum of expenses was diverse.
