The Icelandic Parliament (Althing) is elected every four years. There are 63 seats in the Icelandic Parliament, distributed in accordance with a method known as proportional representation. The system guarantees that political parties gain seats in the parliament in proportion to the number of votes cast for them throughout the country. There were elections in Iceland in both 2016 and 2017 due to political protests and scandals, among others related to the Panama Papers.
