In 2020, 55 percent of responding consumers in the United States stated that they prefer to add functional ingredients to their diet via the intake of supplements. Generally, U.S. consumers prefer this option over inherently functional food and beverages. Functional food and beverages with added fortification were least likely to be named as preferred method to add functional ingredients to a diet.
