In the fiscal year 2020, East Japan Railway Company (JR East) earned around 954.34 billion Japanese yen from passenger revenue in Japan, more than any of the other JR passenger companies. Among the seven railway companies in Japan formerly belonging to the public Japanese National Railways, JR East is the largest passenger railway company. The company's railway system primarily serves the Kanto and Tohoku regions.
