Alternative investment asset allocation of global SWFs 2023

Real estate securities accounted for the largest portion of assets managed through alternative investment products. Private equity securities ranked second accounting for 7.4 percent of the total amount of sovereign wealth fund (SWF) assets allocated to alternative investments.

Sovereign wealth funds are state-owned investment funds that serve different purposes according to their mandate. Sovereign savings funds are used by governments to hedge against the cost of an increasingly elderly population, and to generate intergenerational equity.

This data shows the breakdown of the asset allocation among global sovereign wealth funds (SWF) across alternative investment securities only. Alternative investment asset allocation accounts for less than one-third of total asset allocation.
The survey results are reflective of a survey group complied of 142 chief investment officers,heads of asset classes, and senior portfolio strategists from 85 sovereign wealth funds and 57 central banks. Collectively, these institutions manage approximately US$21 trillion in assets.
