World orderbook and its share of the global merchant fleet 2007-2021
Between 2007 and 2020, the capacity of ships in the world orderbook generally decreased, reaching some 2.4 million TEU in 2020. It is projected that 2021 should see an uptake in new ship orders, which are expected to amount to some four million TEU. Consequently, ships in the global orderbook accounted for a lesser share of the world fleet in the observed period. However, this share is projected to increase in 2021, when ships in the world orderbook should make up between 17 and 20 percent of the global fleet.
