Number of named storm direct hits in the U.S. 1991-2021, by type
In 2021, two hurricanes made landfall in the United States, of which one was a major hurricane (category 3 or higher). The previous year had seen the record number of hurricanes to hit the country in one year within the indicated period. Despite the smaller number of hurricanes, 2021 tied with 2002 for the highest number of tropical storms to hit the U.S. in one year, with six occurrences. Tropical storms are cyclones with a wind speed surpassing 39 miles per hour but below the hurricane threshold of 74 miles per hour.
