Drivers of migration for refugees and migrants from Central America in Mexico 2021
According to a survey carried out in 2021 in Mexico among immigrants from different Central American countries, the majority of respondents left their home country because of safety and economic reasons. Approximately 81 percent of immigrants and refugees stated they left because of violence, insecurity and conflict, while 67 left for economic hardship. Furthermore, another survey showed that more than half of immigrants located in Guatemala and Mexico believed that smugglers are using more dangerous routes since the outbreak of the COVID-19.
