In 2020, rail freight train departures were overall six percent fewer than in 2019. This was due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a reduction of freight trains in the region, particularly in April and June of 2020. Latvia was the most affected, its freight departures dropping by 37 percent year-over-year. By contrast, Ireland's rail freight reported a hike of almost a quarter its 2019 departures.
