Global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions increased two percent in 2023 to reach a high of 53 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e). Since 1990, global GHG emissions have risen by more than 60 percent. CO₂ accounts for roughly three quarters of greenhouse gas emissions, and is the main driver of climate change.
