Coal share of electricity generation in the U.S. 2021, by leading state
In 2021, West Virginia was the U.S. state with the leading share of coal in the electricity generation mix. That year, coal accounted for almost 91 percent of the state's power generation. The state of Wyoming ranked second, with a share of 74.4 percent.
