Consumption frequency of game meat in Japan 2020
The majority of Japanese consumers have never consumed game meat as revealed in a survey conducted in October 2020. The largest share of respondents who ate game meat, almost 22 percent, consumed it on one day every few years.
The game meat segment in Japan includes mainly deer and wild boars, with bears and badgers being served as local specialties. To promote game as a source for meat, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries introduced a certification system for game meat processors in 2018 to supplement the certifications of local systems.
