Museums worldwide by status and region 2021

A May 2021 study identified the operational status of museums worldwide, as many institutions had to close to the public due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. According to the report, most museums in Africa and the Pacific were open, with roughly 78.5 and 94 percent, respectively, of institutions in these regions opened as of May 2021. Meanwhile, over a third of surveyed museums in Europe claimed to be closed. Overall, a little more than a quarter of museums from all regions were closed at that time.
