Merger and acquisition (M&A) deals within the upstream oil and gas sector had a transaction value of 181 billion U.S. dollars in 2021. This was an increase of over 69 percent from the previous year, with figures showing a recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. During the period in consideration, figures peaked at 206 billion U.S. dollars in 2017.
