Gas is the leading fossil fuel used for electricity generation in the European Union (EU-27). In 2021, some 523.6 terawatt-hours of electricity were generated using gas turbines. This figure represents a decline of roughly nine percent in comparison to the decade-peak reached in 2019, when some 570 terawatt-hours of electricity were produced from fossil gas. Coal came in second place, accounting for 435.95 terawatt-hours of electricity generated in 2021.
