Global forest carbon stock and carbon density 1990-2020
The total carbon stock in forests in 2020 amounted to 662 gigatons, down from some 668 gigatons in 1990. Forest carbon density, on the other hand, has experienced an increase of roughly 2.5 percent over the last decades, going from 159 metric tons per hectare in 1990 to 163 metric tons per hectare in the year 2020. Most forest carbon is found as organic matter, both in living biomass and in the soil's organic compounds.
