The leading cause of death in Mexico in 2020 was COVID-19. This infectious respiratory disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus killed around 200,270 people in the Latin American country. Meanwhile, ischemic heart disease was the second cause of mortality that year, with about 163,918 deaths. Other common causes of death in Mexico were diabetes mellitus, lower respiratory infections, and cerebrovascular disease.
